BCI was declared a biological reserve in 1923, and is currently supervised by the Smithsonian Tropi- cal Research Institute (STRI). Encouraging <span class="highlight">Research</span> in Developing Countries The goals <span class="highlight">of</span> the Smithsonian are the increase <span class="highlight">and</span> diffusion <span class="highlight">of</span> knowledge. There are many ways <span class="highlight">of</span> accomplishing these goals. On the diffusion side we scientists can publish papers, give talks at meetings <span class="highlight">and</span> for the public, <span class="highlight">and</span> train students <span class="highlight">and</span> staff.
